Final blog post
I am going to be talking about the ancient Olympics and how they were trained. I am also going to tell you about what happened if an athlete won after the Olympics and discuss how the ancient Olympics and the modern Olympics are the same but also different.
So you might be wondering how and where the athletes in the first Olympics trained for the Olympics. Training for the Olympics was a way of life for the athletes. Sometimes they were born into the sport and spent hours and hours training their bodies. It was the young boys who were the ones who trained for the Olympics. This training was also good for the military training.
For wrestling, the most common place that they would train in a school where they only worked on wrestling. It was called a “palaestra.” That's where most of the men who were to compete in the Olympics in wrestling trained with each other. The athletes actually had trainers that would have a stick and point out all of the thing the athlete was doing right and wrong. If you were to do a position wrong with your body than the trainer would stop you and point out what was wrong with his long stick. They practiced wrestling techniques by training with other wrestlers. The trainers also watched what the athletes ate. The athletes also trained without their clothes on and put olive oil on their bodies. This is how the sport worked in Ancient Greece. Wrestling was also important because it was treated like a military exercise. The wrestling schools were also a place that Greek men would go to relax and hang out together in between training times.
The athletes also had to work to build up their muscles. They used something called a “halter” to help them work out. The halter had handles so that the athletes could do two things at once such as squatting and lifting weights at the same time. For the real weight lifting, they sometimes used a large stone that weighed 143 kilograms that they would hold up over their head with one hand and throw it away from their bodies.
Being an Olympic athlete in ancient Greece was pretty amazing. If the athlete won their event, they would get even better treatment since they were competing for the glory of Greece and for the gods. Winning athletes were treated like royalty. Sometimes rich Greeks would give the winning athlete a lot of money for winning their event. If you won, you got a crown made of olives leaves cut from the holy tree at Olympia. The winners would also be treated to a big feast that lasted for about 5 days. The athlete might also get a giant statue of themselves put up at Olympia. The victors got great respect and honor. Sometimes they were even elected to important positions in the cities government. The winning athlete was treated almost like a modern day famous person. They would get to be on the front row in the theater, get a lot of free stuff and have it good for the rest of their lives. If they wore their olive leaf crown out in public, everyone would know that they were an Olympic athlete. The athletes would get great respect from everyone.
The ancient Olympics are very different from today in some ways and very similar in other ways. Both the ancient and modern Olympics had events like wrestling, discus, and the marathon. The trainers in the ancient Olympics were a lot like the trainers in todays Olympics. In the ancient Olympics, one of the most popular sport was chariot racing. They don’t have that sport in today’s Olympics. Also, women were not allowed to compete in the ancient Olympics. Olympic athletes both have special symbols that they wear to show that they are winning athlete. Ancient Olympians have the olive leaf crown and modern Olympians have their gold medals. Some of the training methods are similar too. Instead of stones that they lift over their heads, modern athletes lift weights in a weight room. The Olympics is still really fun to watch today as it probably was for the ancient Greeks. It is fun to watch everyone compete for the glory of their country like the ancient Olympians competed for the glory of their gods.
It has been a great time writing to you guys and I hoped you liked it!
